Now I am not in the position to lay down a deposit due to recently buying a house and getting married, so would be looking to take out finance with the dealer for up to 5 years.
My company mileage will not be very high compared to a lot of people, probably no more than 1000 a month, so comfort isn't a huge priority. However I would need a car with a reasonable amount of space (to carry computer equipment about) and have 5 seats that could be used.
I also have a dog that I will take about in the car when it is not being used for business purposes.
I have looked at getting a low/mid spec Avensis but would appreciate your suggestions for another type of car.

Some people...
As for purchasing outright; figure around 15k to 16k to spend and look at a nice Audi estate.
For that figure you can go wild and look for an S6 or even an RS6 if you like to drive quickly.
If you prefer a more luxury and less sporty car then I would have a look at a new shape 5 series BMW 530d Touring or even an Audi A6 Avant with a big torquey diesel engine.
Mistakes to avoid:
*Dont buy a big petrol estate unless its a sought after model. An S6, RS6 is okay but an A6 3.0 petrol will just drop like a bomb when you come to sell.
*Dont buy a saloon and put your dog on the seats, he'll make a right mess. I love dogs but not in a car.
check out the deals for the audi a4 or a3 s line, awesome looking motor cars, and within your budget!!
