You are right a lot of coin collectors take a title they do not deserve as well as coin investors. Seems all I have to do is sell a few coins to different people and now I can say I am a professional numismatist. Well as far as I am concerned I am not. I am however a numismatist for my library proves that. I guess you can say a person is a numismatist when the books he has is valued at near what his coins are worth except for the rare coins of course. I will add to your definition a little, a numismatist when he has a coin in hand also wonders who had it and where was it all these years. I have a Fugio cent and often wonder if Ben Franklin or some of the forefathers had it in their hands. Was that 1943 zinc coated steel cent in the pay envelope of Rosie the Riviter as she built a tank that year or in 1944. Coin Collecting is the King of Hobbies and one where all can dream and do their thing. A hobby of collecting it your way. Enjoy have fun and above all, dream of owning that rare coin.
